MM Ep 1
Introduction
As we gear up for an exciting Season Two, I'm thrilled to introduce you to our new series, "Mentor Minutes." These are short, impactful episodes where I'll share stories and lessons from my life and from the incredible mentors who've shaped my journey. Today’s topic revolves around accidental mentorship—learning from the unplanned and unexpected teachers life brings our way.
My Personal Story
Born the youngest of five to older parents, my upbringing was distinct and filled with mentors of varying ages and expertise. My curiosity and eagerness to learn were fostered in an environment rich with older siblings, their friends, and my parents' peers. This unique blend of influences allowed me to grow up quickly and absorb wisdom from a multitude of sources.
My parents, particularly my father, showered me with unconditional love and belief in my potential. This support transformed my challenges into opportunities, fueling a can-do attitude that led me through a diverse array of jobs and experiences, ranging from retail and fast food to driving a school bus and being a tour guide. Each role, whether brief or lengthy, became a stepping stone, adding layers of understanding and resilience to my character.
Faith as a Mentor
Another significant aspect of my life has been my faith. Although I didn't grow up in a religious household, a profound personal encounter with Jesus Christ at the age of twelve became a transformative experience. This led me to delve deeper into understanding the Bible, Jesus, faith, and various denominations. Over the years, my faith has not only been a guide but also a mentor. It has encouraged reflection, learning, and the integration of spirituality into everyday life.
The Accidental Learning Process
Much of my learning has been through observation and service rather than intentional mentorship. I realized early on that people just a step ahead of me had valuable insights to offer. This accidental learning—where lessons are gleaned from daily interactions and experiences—became a cornerstone of my personal development.
At around 15 or 16, I discovered the joy of mentoring others. Advising younger girls and sharing what I had learned was fulfilling and made me realize the reciprocal nature of mentorship. This was one of the inspirations for starting this podcast—to share the knowledge and wisdom I had accumulated over the years.
The Lesson of Whining
One story from my childhood particularly illustrates the power of these learning moments. At a day camp when I was six or seven, I learned a crucial lesson about tone and how we present our requests. Fascinated by a camp counselor, I followed her around, trying to get her attention in a high-pitched, whining voice. To my surprise, she responded by mimicking my tone and then gently instructed me on how to ask politely and clearly.
This lesson on whining taught me the significance of tone in communication—an insight that has resurfaced throughout my life. Whether in personal relationships or professional settings, how I say something often matters more than what I say. This understanding has saved me from numerous conflicts and misunderstandings, emphasizing the importance of self-awareness and effective communication.
Reflection and Growth
As I reflect on these experiences, I recognize a rich tapestry of relationships and encounters that have shaped my journey. From my father's unwavering belief in me to a camp counselor's unexpected lesson, each interaction has contributed to my growth and understanding.
Moreover, I’ve realized that we don’t just learn from experience; we learn from reflecting on our experiences. In a fast-paced world that rarely slows down, taking time to reflect can lead to profound insights and personal growth. This podcast aims to create a space for such reflection, encouraging listeners to think about their lives and the lessons they've learned.
